Romania – A Digital Hub for Smart Cities and the Energy Transition
Romania is increasingly positioning itself as a strategic partner in Europe’s digital and energy transition, moving beyond its traditional role as an IT outsourcing destination. With a solid digital infrastructure, an expanding tech ecosystem, and forward-looking public policies, the country is now fertile ground for smart city projects, digital public services, and smart grid technologies.
The tech sector is rapidly growing, with forecasts pointing to a 10% GDP contribution by 2026. This momentum is fueled by investments in AI, fintech, cybersecurity, and IoT. National initiatives such as the “€5 Billion Plan for Digitalization and AI” and tax incentives for IT employees are key accelerators of this growth.
With over 250,000 active IT professionals and 91% internet coverage, Romania delivers real-time tech solutions to both the private and public sectors. Cities like Brașov are already investing in smart mobility – introducing electric buses, GPS tracking, and digital info systems for passengers. ROeID, the national digital ID platform, enables secure and easy access to e-government services, exemplifying progress in smart governance. In the energy sector, projects like CARMEN by Delgaz Grid bring advanced monitoring and optimization to local distribution networks, enabling better integration of renewables and energy efficiency in urban areas.
Across the country, municipalities and public bodies increasingly rely on cloud solutions, data analytics, and digital platforms to streamline decision-making and citizen engagement. Meanwhile, international companies are opening R&D centers in Romania, leveraging local expertise and agile administrative support.
Romania is no longer just a tech provider – it is a co-creator of Europe’s smart and sustainable urban future. For local authorities, energy providers, and urban developers, Romania offers a unique combination of skilled human resources, an evolving regulatory framework, and a digital infrastructure ready to support transformation.
