Public debate on 150 million Euro state aid scheme for energy storage in Romania

The Romanian Ministry of Energy has launched into public debate a new state aid scheme of 150 million Euros financed by the EU Modernisation Fund for investments in energy storage solutions (i.e., batteries).

A national call for projects will be opened and the following criteria must be respected to become eligible as a funding-beneficiary:

  • The development of a storage unit for an existing and fully operational renewable energy production facility
  • The storage unit should absorb annualy at least 75% of the renewable energy produced
  • The value of the state aid scheme involves no more than 100.000 euro/MWh and should not exceed 10 million euros for each project
  • The individual project has no prior public funding and will be implemented until 31.12.2029

The call for projects is adressed to existing or newly-founded (small, medium, or large) companies which are registered in Romania. Companies from EU Member States can apply for state aid as well but must complete the ONRC-registration in Romania until the generation of the first payment round. Moreover, eligible companies should not be active in industries such as fishing or aquaculture.
